How to optimize WordPress images without breaking your site

A practical workflow for reducing image weight, choosing modern formats, and automating new uploads and your existing media library.

Images are often the heaviest part of a WordPress page. The cost is not limited to disk space: every oversized photograph adds bytes to the network request, delays rendering, and consumes bandwidth on every visit.

Good optimization does not mean applying the strongest compression available. It means delivering the right dimensions, format, and quality for the place where an image appears. This guide lays out a safe, repeatable process.

1. Measure before changing anything

Choose representative URLs: your home page, a long article, and a product page if you run a store. Record total image transfer size and identify the LCP element. Keep those measurements so you can compare the same pages after the change.

2. Fix image dimensions

A camera may produce a file more than 5,000 pixels wide while your theme never displays it above 1,200. Resizing prevents visitors from downloading pixels they cannot see. 3. Choose the format for the content

  • JPEG: widely compatible for photography, although often heavier than modern alternatives.
