WebP vs AVIF for WordPress: which format should you choose?
A practical comparison of image weight, visual quality, encoding cost, compatibility, and rollout strategy.
WebP and AVIF are not interchangeable buttons. Both can produce smaller files than traditional JPEG or PNG, but their results vary with photography, graphics, and quality settings.
WebP: the balanced starting point
WebP is a sensible default when you want broad improvement with a straightforward workflow. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Across a mixed media library it usually balances encoding speed and file reduction well.
AVIF: more efficiency when the image suits it
AVIF can preserve detail at small file sizes, particularly in photographs and complex gradients. Encoding costs more, and the output still needs review. Fine interface text or hard-edged illustration can show artifacts when quality is pushed too low.
Do not benchmark one image
Build a sample containing portraits, landscapes, interface screenshots, transparent marks, and product photography. Export several quality levels and compare final weight, appearance at the real display size, and processing time.
The smallest file is not automatically the winner. If important texture disappears or screenshot text becomes soft, raise quality or retain another format.
A practical WordPress decision
WebP works well as a general default for most sites. AVIF is compelling for large photography and catalogs where every kilobyte is multiplied across many visits. Compressify lets you select format and quality in the plugin settings; AVIF availability can depend on the configured plan.
Format does not replace responsive sizing
Converting a 3,000-pixel JPEG to AVIF does not fix serving it in a 400-pixel slot. Format, dimensions, and responsive markup solve different problems. Limit dimensions first, then select format and quality.
Recommendation
Start with WebP when you want a workflow that is easy to validate. Test AVIF across representative content when maximum photographic reduction matters. Keep a backup, measure real pages, and decide from evidence rather than a generic savings claim.
